According to the Wahhabi Shaykh, the Mawlid first appeared in the 4th century. Only a century after the Salaf.
One great misunderstanding that the Wahhabiyyah have regarding the Mawlid is that it is, somehow, a new practice.
Do they not forget that Allah and His angels were the first to practice the Mawlid? They certainly ignore the many miracles surrounding the Prophet’s, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, birth. You will not find many facts, if any at all, in any Saudi approved publication that discuss the magnificent events that happened on the night that the Messenger of Allah, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, was born.
Perhaps these Salafi nimwits forget how the Sahaabah acted around Rasulullah, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, and the seemingly silly things they would do out of love for him. They would compete to catch his falling hair, drops of water that fell from his feet when he was doing wudu. One Sahaabah chucked himself on the floor in front of the Messenger of Allah, sal allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, just so the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, would look at him. They would use his blessed sweat as fragrance, and even more oddly, drink his urine that was found underneath his bed. The Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, instructed one Sahaabah to get rid of some blood that had been taken from the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, through the process of cupping. Yet this Sahaabi decided differently and drank the blood of the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam. The Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, upon hearing about the companions that drank his urine and his blood said about them, that the hell-fire has been made haraam for them! The hell-fire will not touch them! SubhanAllah! This madness, what some people would deem to be insane is, in fact, the true love of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
This is a small example how the Sahaabah celebrated him. Do remember and strongly keep in mind, we are not really celebrating a birthday. A day is a day. No in fact, the true essence of this celebration of the mawlid is, in fact, the celebration of the Messenger of Allah, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam. From his birth, his life, his sunnah, his character – everything about him! We are celebrating the fact that he was sent to us to liberate us from the depths of kufr and shirk, and if it was not for him, we would not have Islam, Qur’an nor know about our Lord, Allah azza wajjal.
Are these Wahhabis completely out of their minds? They continue to scream “Bid’ah, bid’ah” every year. But, since the forth century we have never heard any complaint from any scholar up until the rise of Wahhabism who then started claiming that the mawlid was haram. Ok, Taqi ud-Deen Ibn Taymiyyah, the seventh century scholar of the Hanbali madh-hab expressed his dislike for the mawlid, but he never said it was haram! In fact, we find in his work, Iqtidaa us-sirat ul-Mustaqeem, that he prayed for the practicioners of the mawlid, and even prayed that Allah reward them for their good intentions and their ijtihaad on this matter.
The fact that Imaam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned ijtihaad denotes that the mawlid was deduced from existing evidences within the Sharia’ah.
- The fact that the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, fasted on Mondays, and when asked why, he replied “I was born on this day”
- The fact that Muslims often use a specific day, being the 12 of Rabbi ul-Awwal, to celebrate the coming, birth and life of the Prophet, sal allahu ‘alayhi wasallam. Most of the ulemaa are agreed upon this date. Those scholars that differ are a very, very small percentage. to be near accurate, I would guess 3% from a 100%. It is established that the majority rules, as Allah’s guidance and protection is over the majority
- the fact that the Jews were found to be fasting in the month of Ashuara, and when asked why they did that, it was revealed that they fasted due to Prophet Moses, alayhi as-salaam, liberating them from the oppression of the Fir’awn on that day. The Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, told the believers that they had more right to fast due to this celebration. What about fasting on the day that Allah sent us His beloved Messenger, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, who was sent to liberate us from all taghut and the bondage of Shaytaan?
These are just a few of the Shari’ah actions that have been used, deduced and understood by numerous, ranking, note-worthy scholars that advocated the mawlid. These scholars were the ones that Allah had sent in every generation to revive His religion and refute the innovations.
If the Salafiyyah are true to their claim, why is there not any explicit evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah that tells us that we cannot celebrate the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, his birth, his life, his sunnah etc? And moreover, why did’nt any of the revivers refute mawlid to be an evil innovation. We have as much as eleven centuries of scholarship that have been silent in refuting the mawlid! Why? Why would that be? Furthermore, why is it that we find these revivers, with their god-given, understanding of the religion. to advocate the practicing of the mawlid procession as something mustahaab, i.e.desirable?
Indeed it is the Wahhabiyyah, Salafiyyah that should be rejected – according to the hadeeth of Aisha, radiy Allahu ‘anhu – because it is them and their continuous, and reckless behavior that proves again and again not to be from our affair so – “fu huwa raddun” it is rejected, the Wahhabi way is rejected.
The Sahaabah, radiy Allahu anhum, celebrated the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wasallam, everyday whilst they was in his company. It is evident with what they used to do. So what if we are merely copying and mimicking their actions by binding them together to preform specific to date and non-specific to date mawlid fucntions. So what!
So what the Sahaabah, radiy Allahu ‘anhum, did not call it mawlid as we do. But one thing is for sure, these Wahhabi hypocrites cannot dictate to us how we should and should not love the Messenger of Allah, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, when they prance around and dance with swords in their Wahhabi discos. They cannot tell us that we are committing innovation by reciting poems on the Messenger of Allah, sal Allahu alayhi wasallam, when their parties sound like donkeys on Viagra! They cannot say that we are imitating the kuffar when they are clearly dancing with kuffar that ordered the bombing of millions of innocent Muslims in Afghanistan and ‘Iraq! They cannot tell us that we cannot celebrate the birth of the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, when they clearly celebrate the day that the Saudis took over the hijaaz, and furthermore celebrate Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdil Wahhab Week. What hypocrisy.
