Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab a Mujaddid?

Lets deal with the claim that Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab was a reviver of the deen. Now before we look into this claim, it is important we understand a few ahaadeeth that has been passed down to us.

The first hadeeth is the following hadeeth of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam in which he said:

“The best of generations is my generation, then the one after that, then the one after that. After them will appear untrustworthy people” Saheeh al-Bukhaari, The book of the Merits of the companions of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam, Volume 5, hadeeth no. 2 and 3, also of simular import in Saheeh al-Bukhari, The Book of Witnesses, Volume 3, Number 820; Volume 8, The Book of ar-Riqaaq, Number 437 and more.

We know from this that the best of generations in knowledge of Sunnah are the Prophet’s companions, those that followed the companions and then those that followed the students of the companions. In otherwords the first three generations which ended at 400AH. 400 years after the Hijrah the era of the Salaf had finished and the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wassalam warned that from this period would arrise scholars that lie. Untrustworthy people, but before we think we cannot trust anybody, read the next hadeeth:

The holy Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam said “This knowledge will be carried by the trustworthy ones of every generation – they will expel from it the alterations made by those going beyond bounds, the false claims of the liars, and the false interpretations of the ignorant” Mishkaat ul-Masaabeeh, hadeeth no. 248 and classified as authentic

The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wassallam is telling us that there will be trustworthy scholars that confirm the Sunnah and refute the people of bid’ah, likewise read the next hadeeth:

The Holy Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam said “At the head of every one hundred years, Allah will send to this nation one who will reviver for it its Religion. ” Sunan Abu Dawuud, Kitaab ul-Malaaham, hadeeth no. 4291 and even the Wahhabi scholar Albaani has classified this hadeeth as Saheeh in his Silsilah as-Saheehah 2/148, hadeeth no. 599.

The import of this hadeeth is crucial to understand, as the word in Arabic for reviver is mujaddid, meaning somebody who renews the religion by enjoining the Sunnah and forbidding the bid’ah. Also notice how the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wasallam said that Allah would send a mujaddid every hundred years!

This has to mean that any reviver that comes must affirm the message of the reviviers that have gone before. This means that they would have enjoined the Sunnah and refuted the innovations of each age. Here lays the challenge to the very claim of Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab being a reviver, because for him to be a reviver, the Wahabis have to present a reviver from each century that came with the very same message as Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab, and what was the message of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab?

1. He claimed that the mushrikeen of Makkah were upon tawheed ur-Rabubiyyah and that their tawheed would have been perfect had they of not called upon others besides Allah.
2. He also taught that the Muslims have declined from the 4th century onwards and fell into idolatry and that idoltry was rapamt in Makkah and Madinah
3. He also taught that the Muslims of his age were in the depth of kufr and shirk even more than that of the Musrikeen of Makkah
4. He taught that it is permissable to spill their blood and loot their property and that their testimony of faith [recitation of the kalimah] was invalid
5. He taught that the four madh-habs were shirk as the Muslims were worshipping the Imaams as the Jews and the Christians worshipped their priests and Rabbis
6. He taught that the annual celebration of Milaad un-Nabi was shirk because the people who do so were raising the Prophet to the level of god-hood as the Christians did with Jesus

The problems that the Wahhabiyyah have, is producing such revivers of each century who came foward and preached the same message of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab.

Wahhabis cannot ever produce any revivers of each century who said the same things as Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab and ultimately their claim of Islamic purity falls to the ground.

Thus, we can then safely conclude that it is Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab is an innovator and that he bought something new that was unknown to the previous revivers. This is another valid reason why I am not a Wahhabi!

  1. Jazqakallah khair dear brother, thanks for posting this.. I am from Kerala, a state in south India.

    Kindly send me if you have english translations of ahadees, books of the imams of madhhab, the holy quran…to my id suaibpt[at]hotmail[dot]com
    I am praying to allah to give you long life with aafiya. Ameen. Sorry if my english is bad.

  2. assalamu aleikum wa rehmatullah

    I wish to tell you that i met a muslim revert in maghreb and i mentioned your book and he laughed and started making some very cruel jesture, he said to me that you had stolen shaykh hasan abou jafars project from his website and faked a translation of al lum’a. he was very demeaning. he said he knew you from nottinghem and claimed he was your amir ! can you please shed some light on these rumors?

    • Wa alaykum as-Salaam

      I know of these very same rumors and know of the people who are spreading them. I am not to bothered either. The fact of the matter is that my copy of Lu’mat ul-I’tiqaad was released in 2009, his was released in 2011. Plus anybody who buys my copy and really matches it up to anything would be honest enough to say its not stolen, plagurized or whatsoever.

      The real problem is -is that some people think they have a complete ownership on the Hanbali madh-hab here in the west. They are not the only ones that can teach the Aqeed’ah and the fiqh, and the more they insult, the more Allah will continue to strip them of the work and honor me with the knowledge and know how in carrying out the duty.

      So they can continue to say what they want, because every-time they open their mouths it’s only a train full of goodness that arrives at my station. That is all I have to offer regarding this matter.

  3. The Reviver Claim

    According to the Wahhabiyyah, Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab is seen to be the absolute reviver who came to correct the jahiliyyah that the Muslims supposedly have fallen into for the past six hundred years. The modern translator and owner of Dar us-Sunnah Publishers had this to say regarding Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab:

    “Born in the year 1115H/1703AD in ‘Uyaynah, approximately seventy kilometres to the north of Riyaad,Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab … was to commence a da’wah that would spread throughout the Muslim world, he was to commence a revival which was the cause of millions of Muslims questioning, and ultimately rejecting, many superstitious beliefs held by their peers and predecessors. It was a call to take the Muslims back to the pristine Islam of the early Muslims” p. 12 of the Foundations of Islam, being a translation of Masaa’il al-Jaahiliyyah by Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab

    Now please do tell me what is wrong with this bold claim?

  4. As salaamu alaikum yaa Abaa Muhammad,

    How come these people don’ t provide THEIR historical references? I would like to see some decisive history on Muhammad Ibn Sa’ud, as well as some documentation of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab EVER raising a sword against the disbelieving British, who were already, as I understand, in the Jazeeratul Arab.

    • Wa alaykum as-Salaam, they cannot, because they destroyed history whilst the Sunni scholars and the western kuffar documented it. All we here is fanciful fairytales regarding Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab, nothing really factual.
      Yet, when I quote from their own books they call their own scholars liars unknowingly. They should check the references and see which books I am quoting from before accusing me of lying, because what they are doing is calling people like Ibn Baz, and Yasir Qadhi liars.

  5. Almost a good article, except lacking references and evidence of such statements from ibn abdul-Wahhab, like all other liars, you talk much but lack any historic evidence.

    It’s sad so many people have fallen for the British and western agenda of calling names such as ‘Wahhabi’ / ‘Wahhabism’.
    May I kindly remind you that al-Wahhab is one of the most beautiful names and the name of Allah aza wajal who you claim to love.
    And his name was Muhammad, the SON of Abdul-Wahhab – clearly you also have little understanding of Arabic.

    With regards to others who were reviving the people back to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (alayhis salaatu was-salaam) and exactly like Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab, perhaps you haven’t heard of: -

    1. Imam as-Shafi’ / Ahmad ibn Hanbal;
    2. Imam al-Bayhaqi;
    3. Sheikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah;
    4. Ismail ibn Kathir;
    5. Ibn al-Uthaymeen / bin Baaz / al-Albaani;
    6. Abu Ishaq Al-Huwayni / Muhammad Yaqub / Muhammad Hassan.

    And many shuyookh who went before ibn Abdul-Wahhab, but one of the greatest of all centuries was Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab, simply because of the amount of corruption in Islam during his time, specifically Sufi’s.

    • Salamun ‘Alaykum wa Rahmatullah dear brother in Islam

      Would you still call me a liar if I provided references and scans?

      Regarding the name for the Wahhabi cult in Arabic, it is al-Wahhabiyyah! Which is not one of Allah’s names, but just so happens to be a derivative that shares the same radical root letters W-H-B. Wahhabi also has a yaa un-Nisbah on the end of it, which again is not Allah’s name but is a common noun and a active participle [ism fa'il] denoting anybody that follows the Wahhabi cult.

      What about the Qadariyyah? Allah’s name al-Qadir sharing same three root letters as Q-D-R What about the cult known as the Karamiyyah? Allah’s name al-Kareem sharing the same root letters K-R-M? What about the cult the Jabbariyyah? just as somebody from the Jahmiyyah cult is called a Jahmi is its active particle form, somebody from the Jabbariyyah is called a Jabbari! BUT WAIT!!! IS NOT ALLAH’S NAME AL-JABBAR ??? from J-B-R??? please consider this point closely.
      W-H-B al-Wahhab Wahhabiyyah Wahhabi
      J-B-R al-Jabbar Jabbariyyah Jabbari

      Ibn Taymiyyah, Bin Baz, Albaani who have all used the term Jabbariyyah to refer to the cult who deny that man has any free will.

      Regarding the following list:

      1. Imam as-Shafi’ / Ahmad ibn Hanbal;
      2. Imam al-Bayhaqi;
      3. Sheikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah;
      4. Ismail ibn Kathir;
      5. Ibn al-Uthaymeen / bin Baaz / al-Albaani;
      6. Abu Ishaq Al-Huwayni / Muhammad Yaqub / Muhammad Hassan.

      1, 2, 4 are all well, but the others actually oppose the creed of 1, 2 and 4. You either with the people of truth or the people of falsehood it cannot work bothways. I suggest you check the posting on this very blog called THE TOUCHSTONE

      • Assalamu ‘alaikum,
        You said 1, 2 and 4 are well. You singled out Ibn Taymiyyah? I am a layman of Ahl Sunnah wal-Jam’ah. I only know that he was controversial scholar. Imams like Dhahabi, ibn Katheer and Hafidh ibn Hajar Asqalani have good words for Sheik-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. Could you please clarify how Ibn Taymiyyah (alaihi rahma) differ from the other luminaries of Islam? and I also know that his Sheikh’s sheikh is Huzoor Ghouse al-Azam (radiAllahu ‘anhu).

        I’m greatly benifited from your articles

        Jazakallahu khair

        • Salamun ‘alaykum, I do intend to write a biography about Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah, it will be entitled the Shaykh ul-Islam who fell from grace.

          In this article I hope to do justice between those who blindly defend him and follow him in everything, those who accept him in some matters and recognize his greatness and those who blindly takfeer and insult him. This bio will be found in the 7th century.

          I will give an extra nudge here when the article is finished. Wa as-Salaam

    • What’s even sadder is how Muhammad ibn Sa’ud fell for the British/Western agenda. Remember he is the one who Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab partnered with, and together they laid groundwork for some of the Salafi distortions today, like considering the masses of Muslims astray, and not respecting established leadership.

    • “Almost a good article, except lacking references and evidence of such statements from ibn abdul-Wahhab, like all other liars, you talk much but lack any historic evidence.”

      lol.

      “It’s sad so many people have fallen for the British and western agenda”

      Guess where the Wahhabis got their money from?

      ” of calling names such as ‘Wahhabi’ / ‘Wahhabism’.”

      Because Wahhabis obviously never call Sunnis names (except for “Ahl al-Bidah”, “Jahmi”, “Kafir”, “Deviant”, “Mushrik”, and the list goes on).

      “May I kindly remind you that al-Wahhab is one of the most beautiful names and the name of Allah aza wajal who you claim to love.”

      And strangely enough, Wahhabis are the only ones to ever raise this issue. Why? Because if we can’t label them, we can’t single them out.

      “And his name was Muhammad, the SON of Abdul-Wahhab – clearly you also have little understanding of Arabic.”

      Because he managed to translate an entire book without knowledge of Arabic, right?

      “With regards to others who were reviving the people back to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (alayhis salaatu was-salaam) and exactly like Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab, perhaps you haven’t heard of: -

      1. Imam as-Shafi’ / Ahmad ibn Hanbal;
      2. Imam al-Bayhaqi;
      3. Sheikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah;
      4. Ismail ibn Kathir;
      5. Ibn al-Uthaymeen / bin Baaz / al-Albaani;
      6. Abu Ishaq Al-Huwayni / Muhammad Yaqub / Muhammad Hassan.

      And many shuyookh who went before ibn Abdul-Wahhab, but one of the greatest of all centuries was Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab, simply because of the amount of corruption in Islam during his time, specifically Sufi’s.”

      Imam Shafi’i (r.a.) and Imam Ahmad (r.a.) revived the Sunnah? Then why do you call those who do taqleed of them blind, illogical followers, sheep, cows, etc.? Sufis corrupted Islam? Which explains why Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (r.a.) said good things about Sufis, right? No, my friend, the corruption came from Wahhabis. Study the history of your movement.

  6. Asalam alaykum brother! …Can you provide reference for point 5 and 6 that ibn abdulwahab said such things amount to shirk. It would be very useful ..jazakAllahu khair
